Feather Bomb

A Learning Moment at PRWC 🕊️💥
During a recent photo-documentation session at our wildlife hospital, a routine moment turned into a surprising one. As one of our rehabbers gently adjusted an injured mourning dove for a clearer shot, the bird wriggled free—just enough to trigger one of its natural defense mechanisms: fright molt.
In an instant, tail feathers flew in every direction—what looked like a feather bomb was actually the dove’s instinctive reaction to escape a threat. Many birds, including mourning doves, can shed their tail feathers when startled, giving them a better chance to evade predators.
While it’s not ideal in care, this unexpected moment became a great opportunity to educate our team (and now you!) about the fascinating survival strategies wildlife use every day.
This dove came to us following an encounter with a cat. It’s currently under observation and care. While we’re optimistic about a full recovery—including regrowth of those tail feathers—we’ll continue to monitor its progress closely.
Moments like these remind us that healing wildlife isn’t just about medical treatment—it’s also about understanding the wild instincts that make every animal unique. 💚
