That means he lacks the pigment that would normally give his feathers the natural coloring needed to blend into the bark of a tree. For a small owl in the wild, camouflage is everything. It provides protection from predators and allows them to rest safely during the day.

Luna never had that advantage. When he first came to Peace River Wildlife Center, he was just a nestling. He had been found on the ground behind the visitor center at Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center. Our team returned to the area to search for a nest so he could be reunited with his family, but none could be found.

It is entirely possible that Luna’s unusual coloring made him stand out too much. In the wild, a bright white owl is not hidden. It is seen. For a tiny bird of prey, that can be the difference between survival and becoming prey.

Luna’s chances of surviving in the wild were very slim. Because he could not be released, Luna became something just as important. He became an ambassador.

Today, Luna helps people of all ages connect with wildlife in a way they never have before. He introduces visitors to the world of raptors, helps children understand the challenges wildlife face, and shows our community why conservation matters.

He represents more than just his species. He represents every animal that depends on someone stepping in.
